Composer, violinist, impresario, and New York City resident David Handler takes some help from the Ensemble LPR and Orlando Alsonso’s fingers for these six unique and unclassifiable tracks that possess ambient and experimental qualities while still being loosely anchored to traditional classical sounds. my_heart_sings_the_harmony_web_ad_alt_250

The highly involved “Ever After” begins the listen with soothing percussive sounds and twinkling qualities, and also recruits dense keys and dreaminess in a very cinematic and colorful delivery.

“Solstice” follows and uses Handler’s highly intricate and striking violin alongside Ensemble LPR’s playful and textured presence, while “Lullaby For Piano & Electronics” comes with an ominous mood thanks to the eerie and minimal keys that complement the soft and atmospheric electronics.

On the back half of the album, “Life Like Violence Circa 2003, Or: Untitled Caprice” employs strategic talking/inner dialogue in a collage of manipulated sounds and curious gestures that are both artistic and melodic, and “Sunbled Sky,” the best selection, exits with emotive keys from Alonso and the stirring violin that interact meticulously, beautifully and via much timelessness.

Despite the intimidating album title, this is primarily a very gentle effort. Handler plays most or all of the instruments on each track, and it thematically surrounds fear, whim, rage, pain and fancy—i.e. the everyday tumult of the mind. An artist who is well versed in both acoustic and electronic music, this avant-garde experience is quite as eclectic as the venue he co-founded, (Le) Poisson Rouge. In this basement space for unheard and revered artists, he’s hosted performances from Thom Yorke, Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon, Lorde, Beck and even Philip Glass. Handler’s own work runs a similar course of forward thinking ideas and a multi-faceted delivery that’s aesthetically atypical and of the highest caliber of artistry.
