Both of The Pussycat Dolls albums were reissued this year on vinyl for the first time. This sophomore and final album from 2008 saw longtime member Carmit Bachar no longer in the band, but it didn’t seem to affect the impact of the record.
“When I Grow Up” starts with the layered voices and firm beat making for a sleek version of pop, and “Bottle Up” follows with a more soulful approach that welcomes Snoop Dog’s unmistakable voice to the dance floor-ready mood.
Another well known name makes a cameo on “Whatcha Think About That,” where Missy Elliot lends her pipes to the frisky and upbeat delivery, while the bright synth and sing-alongs of “Who’s Gonna Love You” is textured precisely. The first half ends with the hip-hop nods of the animated “Magic.”
The second half of the album leads with the ambience of “Halo” that’s a bit more reserved, and that approach follows with the balladry of the heartfelt “Hush Hush.” “Love The Way You Love Me” arrives late, and blends the Dolls’ voices into a romantic harmonizing fashion amid the synthetic percussion. Then “I’m Done” exits soft and emotional, where strings add another dimension to the record that’s appreciated.
Nicole Scherzinger provides all lead vocals here, and Melody Thornton also puts her pipes to use on many of the songs, lead and backing. The rest of the Dolls are backing vocalists, and the many guests and collaborators helped propel this effort to #4 on the Billboard 200.
Although they’ve existed in some form or another since this album came out, Pussycat Dolls haven’t released a record since. Their pop, dance, soul, R&B, hip-hop and electro-pop ways are as in demand as ever, though, and longtime fans and plenty of new ears will enjoy this.
