The recording moniker of the London artist Ruth Rothwell, as Empire Child she injects her mixed Indo-Jamaican and South African heritage into a very diverse set of songs with an excellent cast by her side across an autobiographical and very thoughtful 10 songs.
The cozy mood of “Mind Be Free” starts with Rothwell’s soothing voice and Mariano Diaz’s warm keys that welcomes a precise rhythm section. “Right Place” follows with Rene Rossano’s melodic guitar adding much to the lush climate, and “Cut Those Ties” carries a similar sophistication via Miguel Parrando’s dreamy flute and Tomi Lujan’s agile drums.
The middle track belongs to “Feeling Of Healing”, where Adrian Vazquez’s stirring viola and Daniel Acebes’ elegant cello complement Rothwell’s emotive pipes. “Step Up Step On” then enlists Alvaro Zarzuela’s well timed trumpet alongside Victor Merlor’s bass in a calm delivery, but it's the inviting singing of the heartfelt “Trace The Race” that alone is worth the price of admission.
Getting near the end, the reggae spirit of “By Boat” benefits from Norberto Cardoba’s frisky bass and the adaptable singing that’s not short on rhythm. “I Am The Knight” and “Peacefully Does It” exit the record. The former is a punchy moment that’s dance floor ready thanks to the animated rhythm section and strings, while the latter is an intimate finish via the soft singing, gentle drums, moody keys and strategic bass.
Rothwell has a lengthy background working behind the scenes at major labels and helping mold bands like Basement Jaxx and Zero 7. This highly personal effort illustrates her penchant for jazz, R&B, soul and reggae, where her formative years in London are influential and a tremendous amount of self-reflection provided the impetus for an enlightening and absorbing listening experience.
