This debut album from the Pussycat Dolls arrived just over 20 years ago and is back again in many different configurations. This double LP version revisits the original album, and adds an album of bonus tracks.
“Don’t Cha” starts the party with Busta Rhymes and Nicole Scherzinger’s vocals taking help from plenty of backing singers for the radio hit that’s instantly recognizable. “Beep” follows with will.i.am’s unmistakable voice present alongside the Dolls’ harmonizing, and “Waiting” trails with Timbaland helping make for a club ready anthem.
Deeper into the original album, “I Don’t Need A Man” welcomes plenty of grooves and r&b spirit, while “Hot Stuff (I Want You Back)” carries disco nods and no lack of soulfulness.
Further into the second half, “Bite The Dusk” flirts with funk and enlists horns with much success, but it’s the clever interpretation of “Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go” that makes the album worth your time via the beats and cabaret spirit of the medley. “Feelin’ Good” exits and it touches on jazz to accent the stylish and seductive delivery.
The bonus LP offers us the Latin-spirited pop of “Sway,” as well as the rock fused, nearly grungy “Flirt.” “We Went As Far As We Felt Like Going” then recruits plenty of energy and flawless singing for the ’70s cover.
The remainder of the tracks are different versions of songs earlier in the record, and includes Snoop's voice for the hip-hop meets Eastern ideas that complement Scherzinger’s voice, with harmonies from the rest of the outfit, across “Buttons.”
Although they only released two albums, the Pussycat Dolls sure made an impact on pop music in the early 2000s. They still tour today with Scherzinger front and center, and their unwavering fan base and new listeners will appreciate this very thorough double LP.
