The Austin, Texas six-piece Uncle Lucius captured this live album across a pair of sold-out nights at the legendary Gruene Hall in March of 2025, and it does a great job of documenting their country, swampy and Americana-fueled ways.
The set starts with the warm guitars of “Pocket Full Of Misery,” where Kevin Galloway’s deep pipes guide the driving country rock. It isn’t long until Jon Grossman’s mature keys start off the scrappy “Say There Sunshine,” and “Keep Singing Along” comes with a soulful quality that makes great use of Joshua Dane Greco’s thumping drums.
Moving along, the intricate guitar and classic rock nods of “Holy Roller” enlist plenty of grit, while the infectious energy of “Somewhere Else” showcases Drew Scherger’s frisky bass lines.
The back half of the listen leads calm with whistling and Grossman’s cozy accordion across the bright storytelling of “Keep The Wolves Away.” However, “Got Some Coming” picks up the pace thanks to the frisky rhythm section and rhythmic backdrop.
Close to the end, “Mississippi Dive Bartendress” is a rich and melodic record highlight that’s stylish, and “Save Me Jesus,” a Bobby Charles cover, finishes with the band’s own version of gospel that’s busy, meticulous and instantly memorable.
If you’re like me, you might have thought these guys broke up years ago, but they thankfully regrouped in 2023. This double LP features four new tracks, fan favorites and their platinum single from the Yellowstone soundtrack (“Keep The Wolves Away”), and is further evidence of the band flourishing. Galloway’s voice is still gravelly in the best ways, and all but one member sings at some point, too. Michael Carpenter and Doug Strahan’s superb guitar playing brings us plenty of solos that you also can’t fail to admire.
