This is the first album from the Norway native, drummer, rapper and vocalist Øyunn (real name Siv Øyunn Kjenstad), who brings beats, power and soaring vocals to these eight very distinct and unique tracks that were fleshed out over four years and are lyrically very forthright.my_heart_sings_the_harmony_web_ad_alt_250

The pop fueled “New Life” begins with Jens Mikkel Madsen’s animated bass lines that align with both singing and rapping from Øyunn. The title track then follows with dreamy moments, soulful bouts and Kasper Staub’s call and response vocals that complement Øyunn’s bright delivery.

Closer to the middle, the rapid fire drumming of “Hope That You’ll Sing Again” welcomes playful beats, while “Feed The Good” makes great use of Staub’s colorful synth that suits the vocal acrobatics. “Cycle” finishes the first side with an upbeat and pretty display of mature and charming songwriting.

The back side is just three songs but no less memorable. The mesmerizing “Confusion” uses talking and harmonic singing that’s layered in a hazy climate. “I Wanna Talk To You” then manipulates the vocals in a more intimate environment that’s stylish and very much in tune with today’s version of electro-pop. “Conversations in The Night (We're Ok)” exits, and employs motivational quotes from Madsen that surround the rich instrumentation, expressive singing and swirling dynamics.

Øyunn  is perhaps best known as the touring drummer for the Copenhagen sensations Efterklang, as well as a player in Bugge Wesseltoft and Nils Frahm & Guldimund. This debut is soaked in grooves, self-reflection, and no lack of melodies, and has zero problem holding our attention from beginning to end. Perhaps her best trait, though, is the ability to alternate between animated gestures and vulnerability that’s eloquent, insightful and raw in its very human appreciation.
