Keeping Up (Vol. 4)

by Darren Paltrowitz

Here are 5 quick picks for you, the loyal reader:

MUSIC: Hooray For Earth / Hooray For Earth – With a name like “Hooray For Earth,” you’re likely to expect a happy-go-lucky jam band.  Fortunately, it’s quite the opposite with this Boston quartet.  Instead of the piled-on optimism, you have yourself noisy yet structured rock filled with melody.  Fans of the more subdued material from Cave In, Thrice, and Queens Of The Stone Age are likely to approve.  As a sample, try the “Want Want Want” music video, which you can find on YouTube. dannygoldberg_bumping_280LITERATURE: Danny Goldberg / Bumping Into Genius – Few in the entertainment industry can be rightfully compared to Danny Goldberg.  As a publicist, he handled the likes of Led Zeppelin, KISS, and Stevie Nicks.  As a manager, he has overseen the careers of Nirvana, Bonnie Raitt, and Steve Earle.  And as label brass, he presided over Atlantic Records, Mercury Records, and Artemis Records.  This autobiography is the story of how Mr. Goldberg went from being a young journalist to an executive in and out of the music world…and it is very difficult to put down. WEBSITE: Swaptree – Consider this website an example of 21st century bartering.  In layman’s terms, registered users are able to exchange media, including books, albums, DVDs, and video games on a one-for-one basis.  Swaptree helps users match up, even permitting three-way trades.  Ultimately, there is no cost to participate in Swaptree –- aside from paying shipping on your transactions -– so there is nothing to lose in signing up. WEBSITE: The One Love – Assumingly, most Internet users read blogs. Further assumed is that most people enjoy contributing to the less fortunate.  Combining those two worlds, The One Love is a community blog in which all ad revenue goes to the charity selected by the particular blogger.  A mixture of artists, entrepreneurs, and fans, the blog provides constant updates via a variety of music-centric perspectives.  A few clicks a day can make a difference. LITERATURE: Best Life Magazine “A 10-Step Plan For Your Best Autumn Ever” – The autumn is usually appreciated for its foliage, but little else.  This article is a list of staff-assembled ideas as to how the fall season could be made even more exciting for you.  There is no guarantee that a reader will be interested in all 10 of the activities, but who couldn’t use more fun things to do?
